He was born and educated in Harare and is an alumnus of the University of South Africa. Advocate Ochieng began his career in the year 2000 in the employ of one of Zimbabwe's most established (founded in 1928) commercial and general practice law firms, Stumbles & Rowe. His work there involved advising parties to commercial disputes and other litigation, as well as transactions such as leases, joint ventures and the disposal or acquisition of assets. Notably, he was frequently part of teams advising various parties both locally and abroad on the legal issues arising from the wholesale expropriation of commercial farmland and equipment in Zimbabwe. Ochieng also undertook work in arbitration and alternative dispute resolution, and completed the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators' International Entry Course in 2002. He left the firm (now known as Coghlan, Welsh & Guest Incorporating Stumbles and Rowe) in 2005. Before going on to join the Bar, Ochieng focused for some time on transaction-based work, and advised as far back as 2007 on transactions undertaken to comply with the indigensiation and black economic empowerment legislation in Zimbabwe. He also had a stint abroad (2007 – 2010) with a leading Tanzanian commercial law firm where he performed transaction, arbitration and ADR work and also assisted with litigation. His transaction experience in Tanzania (an English common law jurisdiction) included conducting due diligence investigations, advising on investment and regulatory compliance, and the drafting and negotiation of transaction documents in (among other transactions) mergers, acquisitions and asset sales. Advocate Ochieng currently serves as the Secretary to the Bar Council of Zimbabwe. He is an Associate member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, and is soon to complete a Master's degree in International Economic Law with the University of South Africa. He is proficient in French and Swahili, is married and has 2 children – Alexander and Miranda.
