Referred to as the King of Pop, he is the most successful entertainer of all time, and one of the most influential. His contributions to music, dance and fashion,[1] and a much publicized personal life, made him a global figure in popular culture for over four decades. Alongside his brothers, he made his debut as lead singer and youngest member of The Jackson 5 in 1964. He began his solo career in 1971. His 1982 album Thriller remains the best-selling album ever, with Off the Wall (1979), Bad (1987), Dangerous (1991) and HIStory (1995) among the world's best-selling albums ever. He is credited with having elevated the music video from mere promotional tool into an art form: his videos for Billie Jean, Beat It and Thriller made him the first African American artist to amass a strong crossover following on MTV. Jackson popularized a number of physically complicated dance techniques, such as the robot and the moonwalk. His distinctive musical, vocal style and choreography are credited with having transcended generational, racial and cultural barriers. Michael Jackson was inducted onto the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1980 as member of The Jacksons and in 1984 as solo artist. Throughout his career he received numerous honors and awards, including the World Music Awards' Best-Selling Pop Male Artist of the Millennium, the American Music Award's Artist of the Century Award and the Bambi Pop Artist of the Millennium Award.[2][3] He was a double-inductee of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, once as a member of The Jackson 5 in 1997 and later as a solo artist in 2001. Jackson was also inducted in several other hall of fames, including Vocal Group Hall of Fame (as The Jackson Five member) in 1999, Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2002 and Hit Parade Hall of Fame (with his brothers) in 2009.[2][4] In 2010, Jackson was inducted into the Dance Hall of Fame as the first (and currently only) dancer from the world of pop and rock 'n' roll.[5] Other achievements include several Guinness World Records (including the Most Successful Entertainer of All Time),[6] 13 Grammy Awards (not including the Living Legend Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award),[7][8][9] 26 American Music Awards (24 only as a solo artist, including one for Artist of the Century, but not the poll of Artist of the '80s)—more than any artist—[10][11][12][13][14] 13 number one singles in the US (more than any solo male artist),[15][16] and estimated world sales of up to 750 million records.[17][18][19][20] For the high number of certifications country by country, it was necessary to divide the album discography into two pages, one for the Peak chart positions and one for the Certifications and Sales. The discography is equal in both pages (with the difference that in the charts page there is also a list of minor compilations).
