Its lyrics are about the death of three of late bassist Jason Thirsk's friends, Tim Colvin, Carlos Canton, and Tom Nichols, who died in a car accident. At the end of the song, you can hear someone say "Brett, we love ya"; some fans of the band think that they are referring to Brett Gurewitz, the guitarist of Bad Religion and founder of Pennywise's label Epitaph Records. In 1996, following death of Thirsk, "Bro Hymn" was recorded again for their fourth album Full Circle as "Bro Hymn Tribute", which is dedicated to him. On this version, one the lines from the original, "Canton, Colvin, Nichols, this one's for you", is replaced with "Jason Matthew Thirsk, this one's for you". This version of "Bro Hymn" was not a hit song on the charts, but today receives substantial radio play. "Bro Hymn" remains the anthem for many sports teams and college drinking groups around the world: The National Hockey League's Anaheim Ducks, and is played after each home goal since the 2005–06 season.[2] When the Ducks won in the Stanley Cup finals, the band played as the Ducks saluted the fans.[3] The National Hockey League's Philadelphia Flyers also have used "Bro Hymn" since the 2007/08 season for each Flyers goal scored at home The official theme song of the Penn Avenue drinking team at Clarion University of Pennsylvania.
