Richard Ward (April 15, 1689 - August 21, 1763) was an American politician, the Governor of Rhode Island from July 1740, when he assumed the office on the death of the former Governor, until 1743.[1] A Newport Rhode Island native,[2] Ward had previously held the position of General-Recorder of Rhode Island from 1714 to 1730. He was elected Deputy Governor in May 1740.[1] The son of Thomas Ward and Amy Billings,[3] Ward was the father of several notable politicians in Rhode Island: Samuel, who would also become Governor, and his brothers Thomas and Henry, who both served lengthy terms as Secretary of the Colony.[1] References ^ a b c Peterson, Edward (1853).
