It runs from an intersection with U.S. Route 60 in Chesterfield County near Midlothian northeast and east to US 60 in downtown Richmond. It is entirely located in the City of Richmond and Henrico and Chesterfield counties. East of Interstate 195 (Belt Line Expressway), SR 147 follows a one-way pair of Cary Street eastbound and Main Street and Elwood Avenue westbound; its eastbound end is at the intersection of 14th Street (US 60/360) and Cary Street. Its westbound beginning is at the intersection of 14th Street (US 60/360) and Main Street. West of the Belt Line Expressway, for most of its length, the road is known as Cary Street Road (north of the river) and Huguenot Road (south of the river). SR 147 crosses the James River on the Huguenot Memorial Bridge.
